  • City staff attend El Grito celebration in Champaign

    On Sunday, September 15, 2024, City staff from the Equity and Engagement Department attended the 4th Annual "El Grito" Celebration in Champaign at the Market St. Stage. El Grito is a Welcoming Week event and is the traditional celebration of Mexican Independence Day. The event featured cultural performances including traditional Pueblan Carnival dancers, Ballet Folklorico dancers, traditional Mexican music, and The Urbana High School Mariachi Band. This family-friendly celebration had over 1,500 people in attendance.

  • Government 101 Resource Expo held at Champaign Public Library

    On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, city staff from six different departments came together to execute the first-ever Government 101 Resource Expo at the Champaign Public Library. This event was a collaboration between the City of Champaign and City of Urbana, designed as a low-pressure way for community members to learn about city resources, ask questions, meet city staff, and become more comfortable with government operations.

    On Friday, September 13, 2024, Janel Gomez, Community Relations Manager & Compliance Officer in Equity and Engagement (E&E), along with Human Rights Staff from three other central Illinois municipalities, met with Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) Director Jim Bennett and IDHR legal staff in Springfield.

  • Champaign Fire Department responds to residential blaze on Normandy Drive

    The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a residence in the 1600 block of Normandy Dr. on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at 1:08 p.m. Fire crews were able to quickly get the fire under control.

  • Anthony Drive to close for construction from September 23-27

    White Construction will close Anthony Drive between Dobbins Drive and Campbell Drive. Both eastbound and westbound Anthony Drive traffic will be detoured in the area. The closure will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting on Monday, September 23, and ending on Friday, September 27, 2024, weather permitting. Access will be maintained to all local properties.

  • Shooting incident under investigation in Champaign

    Champaign Police were dispatched to the 300 Block of E. Bradley Avenue at 10:23 p.m. on September 16, 2024, following reports of a shooting with injuries. On-scene, officers located a 16-year-old male victim from Urbana with multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds to the torso. Officers and personnel with the Champaign Fire Department immediately rendered medical aid until the victim could be transported to an area hospital. He was taken immediately to surgery upon arrival and remains in serious but stable condition.

  • Lane closure announced for repairs on Obsidian Drive from September 17-24

    In order to repair a storm sewer at 3901 Obsidian Drive, Fred’s Plumbing will close the eastbound lane of Obsidian Drive midblock between Peppermill Lane and Bluegrass Lane. Through traffic will be allowed in this area, and access will be maintained to all properties on Obsidian Drive.

  • Countywide residential electronics collection scheduled for October

    The Countywide Residential Electronics Collection (CREC) event this fall will take place on Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Parkland College.

  • Local homeowner revitalizes previously neglected Garden Hills property

    A Garden Hills Neighborhood home had fallen into extreme disrepair. An exterior housing and several nuisance cases were opened on the property. The Neighborhood Services Department (NSD) contracted to remove a large amount of refuse from the yard, mow the lawn, and secure the property. The housing case was referred to the Legal Department, and it was expected that the City would have to demolish the property.

  • Champaign announces fall yard waste collection schedule

    The City of Champaign has announced the schedule for its Fall Yard Waste Collection program, which will run from October 14 through December 13, 2024. Every resident within the city limits will have four collection dates this fall. Orange Zone pickups will commence on October 14, while Blue Zone pickups will begin on October 21.

  • City announces reconstruction of Brittany Trail and Southford Trace drives

    As part of the City’s 2024 Concrete Street Improvements Project, the failed pavement on Brittany Trail Drive near Southford Trace Drive and the failed pavement on Southford Trace Drive near Brittany Trail Drive will be reconstructed. Work will continue, weather permitting, on Monday, September 16, 2024. Brittany Trail Drive will temporarily become a one-way, eastbound traffic only from Southford Trace Drive to Staley Road.

  • Southbound lane closure on Mattis Avenue for traffic signal replacement

    In order to replace the traffic signal cabinet, CS&L will close a southbound lane of Mattis Avenue at Paula Drive. Stop signs will be deployed while power is removed. Once power has been restored, the signal will be in flash until work is completed.

  • Kirby Avenue westbound lane closure scheduled for September 17

    In order to perform sewer lining and associated repair work, A&R Services and Hoerr Construction will be working at the intersection of Kirby Avenue and Carriage Way the week of September 16, 2024, weather permitting.

  • Westbound lane of University Avenue to close for water service installation

    Illinois American Water will close one westbound lane of University Avenue between First Street and Second Street to install water services. The closure will commence on Monday, September 16, and the lane is scheduled to reopen on Friday, September 20, 2024. During this period, westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane.

  • Champaign holds 9/11 remembrance ceremony at West Side Park

    On September 11, 2024, the Champaign Fire and Police Departments held a ceremony at West Side Park to honor the lives lost in the tragic events of 9/11. The event featured reflections, the ringing of the bell, and the lowering of the flag in memory of the victims, first responders, and their families.

  • City launches new online portal for liquor license applications

    In August 2024, the City launched a new online process for liquor license applications and renewals. Through OpenGov, those interested in obtaining a liquor license for any type of business or temporary event can now apply entirely online. This paperless process is designed to be more environmentally friendly, allowing applicants to check the status of their application, submit additional documentation, and securely pay licensing fees via online banking or credit card.
