On Friday, September 13, 2024, Janel Gomez, Community Relations Manager & Compliance Officer in Equity and Engagement (E&E), along with Human Rights Staff from three other central Illinois municipalities, met with Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) Director Jim Bennett and IDHR legal staff in Springfield.

IDHR is set to release a hate crimes hotline called “Help Stop Hate,” which will go live in October. The department is seeking municipal support for the rollout. Additionally, Mr. Bennett addressed threats to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) from the federal government, including recent Supreme Court decisions, and emphasized how the State of Illinois continues to protect civil and human rights.

The IDHR legal staff have recently released guides on Fair Housing and the Implications of Nuisance in Crime-Free Housing Ordinances. These guides are available at www.dhr.illinois.gov.
