Neighborhood engagement activities transition indoors as summer ends
On Saturday, August 17, 2024, the Ashland Park HOA hosted their Neighborhood Resource Fair & Street Party. Staff from Neighborhood Services, Police, and Fire supported the event. Neighbors reported that the event was great fun, and they were glad to have the opportunity to connect with all the resource vendors who participated.

University Avenue lane closure scheduled for August 26
In order to complete a storm sewer lining project, Hoerr Construction will be closing a westbound lane on University Avenue between First Street and Market Street. Work is scheduled for Monday, August 26, 2024, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. This work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.

Logan Street closure scheduled for tree work on August 24
The Public Works Department has announced a road closure on Logan Street between Market Street and Water Street to facilitate tree work. The closure is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. During this period, no through traffic will be permitted.

Champaign Fire Department issues significant building permit
The Champaign Fire Department’s Building Safety Division has issued a building permit for a project valued at $250,000 or more. The permit was granted for an alteration to a gas station located at 3604 N Mattis with an estimated construction value of $252,500. The permit was issued on August 16, 2024.

Champaign Unit 4 School District hosts back-to-school giveaway
On August 6, 2024, the Champaign Unit 4 School District held a school supply giveaway at Market Place Mall. From 11 AM to 1 PM, over 30 partnering agencies gathered to distribute various school supplies to families. The Equity & Engagement Department participated in the event to provide families with information about community resources available to them.

Annual CU Days brings community together with resources and activities
On August 10, 2024, the City participated in the annual CU Days event. This event is steeped in history and popular for its resources, community focus, and activities. The Equity & Engagement and Neighborhood Services Departments collaborated to distribute back-to-school supplies and share information about City resources. More than 200 children received items such as notebooks, water bottles, and folders to support their return to school.

Champaign honored with procurement award at Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce Convention
On August 7, 2024, Mikal Washington from the Equity and Engagement Department and Adonis Fuller from the Finance Department attended the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce Convention in Peoria, IL. City staff participated in a matchmaking session where they discussed the benefits of joining the Champaign Diversity Advancement Program (CDAP), the process for becoming a vendor with the City of Champaign, and upcoming contracting opportunities.

Springfield Avenue lane closure scheduled for storm sewer project
Hoerr Construction will close an eastbound lane on Springfield Avenue between New Street and Lynn Street to complete a storm sewer lining project. Both eastbound and westbound traffic will be maintained during the work, which is scheduled for Thursday, August 22, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled in case of inclement weather.

Champaign police arrest teenager over social media threats against schools
A Champaign teenager has been arrested following threats made against three schools in Champaign. Champaign Police were dispatched at 1:50 p.m. on August 19, 2024, to Edison Middle School following a report of threats made on social media. On-scene, officers learned that a social media post had been circulating in the school that contained threats against multiple area schools and referenced the three area middle schools by name. Special loading zone to be installed at Unit 4 Special Education building
The Public Works Department will install a special loading and unloading zone in front of the new Unit 4 Special Education – Young Adult Program building at 402 N. Randolph Street. This zone will accommodate specialized pickup and drop-off vehicles as well as ambulances and medical vehicles occasionally needed for the location.

Neighborhood Services hosts informational meeting on community safety
On Thursday, August 15, 2024, Neighborhood Services held a meeting for residents of the Stone Gate and Green Meadows neighborhoods at Centennial High School. Staff from the Fire Department discussed fire safety and explained the requirements for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Information on receiving smoke detector installations and other fire safety training was also shared. Police staff provided crime statistics for the area and offered tips for crime prevention.

Neighborhood Services supports community events with grants and resources
On Friday, August 9, 2024, Neighborhood Services supported the End of Summer Celebration hosted by Y on the Fly. Families enjoyed games, a bounce house, and food. The Neighborhood Ambassadors assisted with setup and teardown, as well as distributing food during the event. Attendees received school supplies as kids prepare to return to school.

Fifth Street to close for crane placement and solar panel installation
In order to place a crane and install solar panels at 405 E. Stoughton Street, Custom Service Crane will close Fifth Street between Stoughton Street and Springfield Avenue. The closure will occur on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting. During the closure, access will be maintained to all properties.

Champaign County Community Coalition discusses mental health initiatives at monthly meeting
On August 14, 2024, the Champaign County Community Coalition held its monthly meeting at the Holiday Inn Conference Center. The 2nd Annual Black Mental Health and Wellness Conference was discussed as registration begins on August 19th. The conference will take place on October 26th, 2024, from 8 am to 4 pm at Parkland College. This year’s conference is centered around deepening understanding, expanding perspectives, and contributing to the advancement of mental health in the Black community.

University staff engage in immersive simulation to understand poverty
On August 9, 2024, April Faulkner from the Equity and Engagement Department volunteered with the School of Social Work to participate in an Immersive Simulation Experience for professional staff at the University. The goal of the simulation was to promote poverty awareness, increase understanding, and inspire local change by sensitizing participants to the realities of poverty.
