Hill Street and Neil Street lane closures for crosswalk installation
Feutz Contractors will be closing Hill Street at Neil Street and one lane of Neil Street between Washington Street and Church Street to install a new crosswalk. The work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, and is expected to last three to four days, weather permitting. The closures will occur from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day with no overnight closures.

Church Street lane closure for storm sewer repairs set for July 23-26
In order to perform storm sewer repairs, A & R Mechanical Services, Inc. will be closing one westbound lane of Church Street at State Street, merging it into a single lane through a short construction work zone. Southbound State Street will remain open and unrestricted. The intersection will remain open to normal traffic patterns. Minor traffic delays may occur at work zones.

Green Street lane closure scheduled for water main repair
Illinois American Water and Shaw Brothers will close a lane of Green Street between Neil Street and Locust Street to complete pavement patching from a water main repair. The closure will commence on Monday, July 22, and is scheduled to reopen on Friday, July 26, 2024. During this period, one lane of westbound and one lane of eastbound traffic will be maintained in the area.

Champaign hosts event to connect local businesses with city resources
On July 13, 2024, Mikal Washington from the Equity and Engagement Department attended the Meet and Greet Social, sponsored by H3. The event focused on building community connections. City staff presented information to local small businesses. The presentation covered City programs and resources, necessary materials for CDAP certification, upcoming events for business development, and other pertinent processes related to effectively engaging in business and contract bidding with the City of Champaign.

Champaign County Community Coalition addresses health needs and homelessness
On July 10, 2024, the Champaign County Community Coalition held its monthly meeting. Local law enforcement agencies shared information related to recent crime activities and updates regarding upcoming events. During the information-sharing portion of the meeting, CU Trauma and Resilience Initiative introduced their new Peer Ambassadors. This summer, the Peer Ambassadors will be engaging in trauma-informed community events, learning how to educate others about managing stress, and serving as youth leaders.

White Construction will close Anthony Drive between Dobbins Drive and Campbell Drive. Eastbound and westbound Anthony Drive traffic will be detoured in the area. The closure will begin on Thursday, July 18, and will be reopened by the end of the day on Friday, July 19, 2024, weather permitting. Access will be maintained to all local properties.

Champaign police introduce drone program for enhanced public safety
The Champaign Police Department is launching a new program designed to promote community safety by offering a bird’s eye view of large community events and in-progress situations. Through the launch of an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Program – commonly referred to as a Drone Program – Champaign Police will be able to quickly search for missing persons, photograph crime scenes and traffic crashes with speed and accuracy, and promote the safety of the community and police personnel.

Champaign Police Lieutenant Andre Davis has announced his retirement following 20 years of service to the City of Champaign. Davis, a Champaign native and 1991 graduate of Centennial High School, will mark his last day with CPD on Friday, July 12, 2024.

City of Champaign to hold groundbreaking ceremony for new Downtown Plaza
The City of Champaign will hold a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the commencement of construction for the first phase of the new Downtown Plaza. The event is scheduled for July 12, 2024, at 4:30 pm at 1 E. Main Street. Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen and State Senator Paul Faraci will deliver remarks during the ceremony.
