  • Intersection of Park Avenue and New Street to close for maintenance

    As part of the City’s 2024 Infrastructure Maintenance Project, A&A Concrete will be closing the intersection of Park Avenue and New Street between Church Street and University Avenue. The work is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 1, 2024, and the closure is expected to last four to six weeks, weather permitting.

  • Police investigate shooting incident on Mattis Avenue

    Champaign Police were dispatched at 12:34 a.m. on June 27, 2024, to the 700 Block of Mattis Avenue for a report of a shooting with injuries. On arrival, officers located a 25-year-old male victim from Champaign with potentially life-threatening injuries from gunshot wounds to the upper leg. Officers and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department immediately rendered medical aid until the man could be transported to an area hospital. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.

  • Champaign officials attend equitable development training funded by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

    On June 5 and 6, 2024, staff from the Equity and Engagement, Public Works, and Neighborhood Services Departments participated in the Equitable Development Data Insight Training (EDDIT) site visit. EDDIT, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, offers specialized data analysis and storytelling training for nonprofit, community, and government organizations dedicated to promoting urban equity in small and mid-sized cities. The EDDIT team comprises professionals from the University of Toronto’s School of New Cities and UC Berkeley.

  • Champaign Fire Department responds to residential fire on South Mattis Ave

    The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire in the 800 block of South Mattis Ave. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at 3:42 p.m. Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the roof of a three-story multifamily apartment building. Crews quickly deployed multiple hose lines inside and outside of the building and extinguished the fire. The fire was contained to one building, rendering one apartment uninhabitable.

  • Champaign Fire Department responds to residential fire on North Champaign St

    The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire in the 1100 block of North Champaign St. on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at 6:03 p.m. Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames emanating from a detached garage, car, and rubbish located behind a residence. Crews quickly deployed multiple hose lines and extinguished the fire. The fire was contained to the property of origin.

  • Anthony Drive to close for construction between Dobbins and Campbell Drives

    White Construction will close Anthony Drive between Dobbins Drive and Campbell Drive. Eastbound and westbound Anthony Drive traffic will be detoured in the area. The closure will begin on Tuesday, June 26, and will be reopened on Friday, June 28, 2024, weather permitting. Access will be maintained to all local properties.

    The City Council agenda for the June 25, 2024 Regular Study Session is now available. This meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers of the City Building, located at 102 N. Neil Street in Champaign, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and participation is encouraged.

Following an application and interview process, the Champaign City Council voted to appoint Brown during the June 18, 2024, Council meeting. He was sworn in and assumed his position that same night.

  • Cross Construction begins street rehabilitation project on June 25

    Starting Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Cross Construction will commence rehabilitation work on Green Street from Russell Street to Prospect Avenue, and on John Street from Russell Street to Willis Avenue. The project includes minor curb and sidewalk ramp replacement, patching, manhole adjustments, milling and paving, and applying new pavement markings.

  • Rehabilitation work set for Country Fair Drive and Kenwood Road

    Starting Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Cross Construction will commence rehabilitation work on Country Fair Drive and Kenwood Road. The project spans from 200 feet south of Springfield Avenue to University Avenue on Country Fair Drive and from Springfield Avenue to a point 200 feet south on Kenwood Road. The scope of work includes minor curb and sidewalk ramp replacement, patching, manhole adjustments, milling and paving, and the application of new pavement markings.

  • Champaign Park District hosts annual Juneteenth celebration

    On June 15, 2024, the Champaign Park District hosted its Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Douglass Park. Juneteenth commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troops' arrival came two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States.

  • Mattis Avenue lane closure scheduled for June 20

    In order to complete a tree removal, JT’s Tree Service will close one northbound lane of Mattis Avenue between Sangamon Drive and Alton Drive. The closure will occur on Thursday, June 20, 2024, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. During the closure, northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane.
