  • Police investigate shooting incident on S. Mattis Avenue

    Champaign Police were dispatched at 1:43 a.m. on June 1, 2024, to the 100 block of S. Mattis Avenue for a report of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a 30-year-old male victim from Champaign with multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. Officers and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department immediately rendered medical aid until the man could be transported to an area hospital. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.

  • Champaign woman charged with aggravated battery in March shooting

    A Champaign woman has been charged for her role in a March 2024 shooting incident on Hickory Street. Champaign Police were dispatched to the 1400 block of N. Hickory Street at 9:24 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2024, for a report of shots fired. As officers arrived on the scene, they were notified of a 24-year-old female victim from Champaign who arrived at a local hospital by personal transport. Additional officers were dispatched to the hospital to interview the woman. The victim was treated for her wounds and later released from the hospital.

  • Anthony Drive road closure announced for June 4-6, 2024

    White Construction will close Anthony Drive between Dobbins Drive and Campbell Drive. Eastbound and westbound Anthony Drive traffic will be detoured in the area. The closure will begin on Tuesday, June 4, and will be reopened on Thursday, June 6, 2024, weather permitting. Access will be maintained to all local properties.

During the closure, westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane. The closure will occur on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

  • Second Street closure for roof maintenance scheduled for May 29

    Topline General Construction will close Second Street between Healey Street and Green Street on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, to complete roof maintenance at 202 E. Green Street. The closure will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Stark Excavating is the contractor for the City of Champaign. Stark will begin work on the westbound lane on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, weather permitting.

  • City of Champaign and Academy High hold successful period product drive

    Throughout April, the City of Champaign collaborated with a club at Academy High to organize a period product drive. This marks the second annual donation drive, which organizers have deemed a significant success. Drop boxes were placed at seven locations across the Champaign area, and an online shop was also available for contributions. The club received donations estimated to exceed $7,000.

  • Annual smoke alarm blitz distributes over 100 devices

    On May 18, the Sheehan Family, in partnership with the Champaign Fire Department, held their annual smoke alarm blitz at the Douglass Community Center. This initiative was born out of the loss of their son, Christian Sheehan, in a tragic house fire in 2016. Over its duration, this annual event has provided more than 1,000 smoke alarms to families. The recent event saw over 100 smoke alarms distributed.

    The City of Champaign is now accepting applications from residents interested in filling an opening in the District 3 Council Member office. Applications are available on the City’s website and from the City Clerk.
