  • Champaign police announce joint effort to enforce speed limits statewide

    The Champaign Police Department announced today it is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts across Illinois to reduce speeding. Throughout July, motorists can expect increased patrols looking for speeding and other traffic violations.

  • White Street road closure scheduled for sewer work

    In order to complete a sanitary sewer connection at 621 W. White Street, Fred’s Plumbing will close White Street from New Street to just east of this address. The closure will begin on Wednesday, July 10, and will reopen on or before Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Through traffic will not be allowed in this area, but access will be maintained to all properties on White Street between New Street and Lynn Street.

  • Prospect Avenue lane closure scheduled for infrastructure maintenance

    As part of the City’s 2024 Infrastructure Maintenance Project, A&A Concrete will be closing one northbound lane of Prospect Avenue between Springfield Avenue and Healey Street. The work will begin on Monday, July 8, 2024, with the closure expected to last six to eight days, weather permitting.

  • Police investigate shooting incident on E University Avenue

    Champaign Police were dispatched at 2:58 a.m. on July 5, 2024, to an area hospital after two people arrived by personal transport with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers learned that a 41-year-old male victim from Champaign had suffered a potentially life-threatening injury to the abdomen and a 28-year-old female victim from Champaign had suffered a graze. Officers interviewed the pair to determine details of the incident that led to their injuries. Both remain hospitalized in stable condition.

    The City Council agenda for the July 9, 2024, Regular Study Session is now available. The meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers of the City Building at 102 N. Neil Street in Champaign at 7:00 p.m. This session is open to the public, and participation is encouraged.

  • Lane closures announced for Mattis Avenue from July 8 to July 22

    Duce Construction will close multiple lanes of traffic on Mattis Avenue between Williamsburg Drive and Paula Drive to complete storm sewer construction. The project will reduce traffic to one lane of northbound and one lane of southbound traffic through the work zone, with lane shifts expected.

  • City launches summer youth employment program for high school students

    The City initiated the 2024 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) on July 1. Under this initiative, high school students from Champaign Unit 4 School District are placed with employer partners for a six-week, 105-hour paid work experience. Due to an unexpected structural change this year, students are not only placed but also officially hired by their respective employer partners. For the first time, students placed with the City are considered City employees.

  • Daniel Street lane closure for pavement patching from July 8 to July 12

    Illinois American Water and Shaw Brothers will close the eastbound lane of Daniel Street between Fifth Street and Sixth Street to complete pavement patching. The closure is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 8, and is expected to reopen by Friday, July 12, 2024, weather permitting. The westbound lane will remain open during the construction period. Access to all local properties will be maintained throughout the closure.

  • Champaign appoints new public works director

    Champaign City Manager Dorothy Ann David has appointed Terry Lusby, Jr. as the City’s next Public Works Director, effective August 12, 2024. Lusby brings over 16 years of experience in public works and construction management in both public and private sectors. His expertise includes overseeing water supply and distribution systems, sewer collection systems, streets, traffic control systems, fleet services, building and grounds maintenance, engineering, contract management, and customer service.

  • Restorative justice event hosted by Trauma & Resilience Initiative

    On July 1, 2024, the Trauma & Resilience Initiative, in partnership with ReImagine IL, held a restorative justice gathering at the Douglass Branch Library. Community organizations such as ReDeploy, DREAAM, the University of Illinois School of Social Work, Champaign County Probation, and the Equity & Engagement department were in attendance. A round table discussion was held over lunch to identify how residents and organizational staff can work together to achieve restorative justice in Champaign and the surrounding areas.

    On June 29, 2024, Angel’s Youth Center hosted its fourth annual “Beat the Streets” event at Champaign’s Centennial Park. Executive Director Angelica Johnson stated that the event was created to educate kids about the dangers of gun violence and to encourage consideration for their future.

    Hoerr Construction will close the south lane of Springfield Avenue between New Street and Lynn Street to perform storm sewer cleaning. During this period, eastbound traffic on Springfield Avenue will merge into the center turn lane through a short construction work zone. Westbound traffic on Springfield Avenue will remain unaffected.
