On June 29, 2024, Angel’s Youth Center hosted its fourth annual “Beat the Streets” event at Champaign’s Centennial Park. Executive Director Angelica Johnson stated that the event was created to educate kids about the dangers of gun violence and to encourage consideration for their future.
Angel’s Youth Center welcomed nearly 50 kids from throughout Central Illinois to Centennial Park. Community residents leaving Sholem Aquatic Center also stopped by to participate in the event. The event featured games and activities aimed at promoting interaction and raising awareness about this serious issue. Mentors from the center, parents, and Champaign Police shared their stories and expertise with attendees. Equity and Engagement staff participated in community building and informally discussed ongoing work at the City.
