The Champaign Police Department announced today it is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts across Illinois to reduce speeding. Throughout July, motorists can expect increased patrols looking for speeding and other traffic violations.

“Speeding causes unnecessary danger on our roads and puts drivers, passengers, and others sharing the roadway at increased risk,” says Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “Champaign Police remind drivers to obey the posted speeds and to ensure that everyone gets home safely.”

During the speeding enforcement campaign, officers will promote visible enforcement of posted speed limits to slow traffic and promote safety. Those found to be speeding or violating other rules of the road will be issued citations and written warnings when appropriate. Efforts to slow speeding in Champaign will focus on arterial routes, especially in areas where they impact neighborhoods.

The speed enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
