Anthony Drive road closure announced for mid-August
White Construction will close Anthony Drive between Dobbins Drive and Campbell Drive. Eastbound and westbound Anthony Drive traffic will be detoured in the area. The closure will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting on Monday, August 12, and ending on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, weather permitting. Access will be maintained to all local properties.

Neighborhood Services hosts LGBTQIA+ homelessness workgroup
On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Neighborhood Services hosted the LGBTQIA+ Homelessness Workgroup on behalf of the Continuum of Service Providers to the Homeless (CSPH). The training session was held in place of the August CSPH full board meeting. The twenty-five attendees who represented various CSPH member agencies received information on best practices when providing services to members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as how to address contributing factors to homelessness among the community in an inclusive manner. Neighborhood groups host block parties and National Night Out events
On Friday, August 2, 2024, the Devonshire HOA hosted their first-ever block party. Approximately 150 neighbors attended, enjoying food trucks, games, and conversations. The Neighborhood Ambassadors supported the event by transporting items borrowed from the engagement trailer.

On Thursday, August 8, Neighborhood Services hosted the CSPH Grant information session on behalf of the Continuum of Service Providers to the Homeless (CSPH). The workshop focused on the upcoming Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Continuum of Care Program Notice of Funding Opportunity for organizations considering applying for this funding.

Neighborhood Services hosts contractor workshop for Bristol Place Senior Residences
On July 30, 2024, Neighborhood Services hosted the Bristol Place Senior Residences Contractor Workshop. Several CDAP contractors attended the workshop to learn how to submit bids on the upcoming construction project. The project developer from AHDVS, LLC, and the general contractor from Carlson Construction discussed the scope of work that will be available and the requirements for bidding. Hedge Road to close for water main construction from August 12 to August 19
In order to complete water main construction for Illinois American Water Company, Duce Construction will close Hedge Road between Mattis Avenue and Summit Ridge Road. The closure will begin on Monday, August 12, and will reopen on Monday, August 19, 2024, weather permitting. During the closure, local access to Hedge Road will be allowed from the east at Summit Ridge.

Community gathers to address recent gun violence incident
On August 5, 2024, a Community Gun Violence Response Meeting was held at Garden Hills Elementary School from 4-5:30 pm. The meeting was hosted by the City of Champaign’s Equity and Engagement Department in collaboration with the CU Trauma and Resilience Initiative. Deputy Chief Coon, City Manager Dorothy David, Deputy City Manager Joan Walls, and Champaign City Council members Vanna Pianfetti, Will Kyles, Kathy Shannon, and Jamar Brown joined community members to discuss their thoughts on the gun violence incident that claimed the lives of two 18-year-olds the previous week.

Champaign increases campus enforcement for move-in/move-out cleanliness
City code enforcement staff will increase enforcement in the campus area from August 12 through September 13 to prevent large accumulations of trash and overflowing dumpsters as students move in and out of their campus apartments. When problems are identified, property owners will be notified and given a short timeframe to remove accumulating trash. Failure to address the issues in a timely manner may result in the City removing the items and billing the property owners.

City concludes summer youth employment services program with celebration
On August 2, 2024, staff from the City Manager’s Office, the Equity and Engagement Department, the Police Department, and Public Works Department gathered with their interns to celebrate the conclusion of the Summer Youth Employment Services (YES) Program. From 11 am to 1 pm, the team enjoyed lunch and engaged in games at West Side Park, marking a festive end to the interns' journey before they return to school.

Lane closure on Market Street scheduled for August
In order to complete pavement patching for Comcast, Northern Construction will be closing one lane of Market Street between Wilber Avenue and Eisner Drive. The closure will begin on Monday, August 12, and will reopen on Friday, August 16, 2024, weather permitting. One lane of northbound and one lane of southbound traffic will be maintained at all times, and access will be maintained to all local properties.

Champaign officials canvass neighborhood following fatal shooting
On July 28, 2024, a tragic gun violence incident claimed the lives of two 18-year-olds in the community. In response, the Equity and Engagement Department staff, aided by Neighborhood Ambassadors and Summer YES intern Iris Kim, canvassed the area surrounding the Mattis North Apartment complex throughout the week of July 29.

Green Street eastbound lane closure scheduled for August 8
In order to complete pruning activities, the Public Works Department will be closing the eastbound lane of Green Street between Garfield Avenue and Russell Street. Eastbound traffic will be detoured to John Street. Westbound Green Street traffic will be unaffected by this project. The closure will take place on Thursday, August 8, 2024, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. This work is weather dependent and may be delayed in the event of inclement weather.

Champaign expands CGTV closed captioning services to multiple languages
The City of Champaign has announced the expansion of closed captioning services for CGTV, the City's government access channel. Initially, the City began captioning all its video programming in English in 2022. This summer, CGTV expanded to offer captions in additional languages. Viewers watching on-demand videos recorded after July 1, 2024, can now choose from English, Spanish, French, and Korean captions. For those watching live programming via the live stream or cable TV, captions are available in English and Spanish.

Daniel Street closure between Fifth and Sixth streets extended until August 5
A&R Mechanical Services, Inc. has announced an extended closure of a section of Daniel Street between Fifth Street and Sixth Street to perform sanitary sewer and sinkhole repairs. Through traffic on the block will be restricted; however, local property access will be maintained. The intersection at Daniel Street and Fifth Street will remain open to traffic.
