Champaign police department earns highest ILEAP accreditation
The Champaign Police Department has been accredited as a Tier II Law Enforcement Agency by the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP), an Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police program. Tier II Accreditation reflects ILEAP’s highest level of professionalism and is based on evidence that CPD policies and practices meet 181 professional standards.

Champaign police announce arrests and firearm seizures amid gun violence investigation
On the morning of September 3, 2024, Champaign Police served search warrants at six locations as part of investigations into recent incidents of gun violence. In total, five people were arrested and eight unlawfully possessed firearms were seized in the search. The search warrants were executed early in the morning at residences located in the 500-block of Crescent Drive, the 2500-block of W. Springfield Avenue, the 1900-block of Nancy Court, the 1600- and 1700-blocks of Valley Road, and the 2000-block of Bruce Drive in Urbana.

Fire departments respond to commercial dryer fire at local hotel
The Champaign and Urbana Fire Departments responded to a fire in a commercial dryer at a hotel and conference center at 1900 S. First St., Sunday, September 1, 2024, at 6:04 p.m. Once on the scene, firefighters reported a fire in a commercial dryer. Crews deployed a single hose line and were able to quickly bring the fire under control.

City announces concrete street improvements project starting in September
As part of the City’s 2024 Concrete Street Improvements Project, the pavement on Brittany Trail Drive from Southford Trace Drive to Staley Road will be reconstructed. Stark Excavating will be the contractor for the City. Weather permitting, Stark will begin work on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Pavement reconstruction on Brittany Trail Drive will take approximately four to six weeks.

The City Council agenda for the September 3, 2024, Regular Council Meeting is now available. The meeting will take place in the City Council Chambers of the City Building, located at 102 N. Neil Street in Champaign, at 7:00 p.m. The event is open to the public, and participation is encouraged.

City staff attend re-entry resource fair hosted by Rosecrance
On August 29, 2024, Code Compliance Inspector Ricardo Alvarez and Administrative Assistant Nina Sibley attended the Re-Entry Resource Fair hosted by Rosecrance. The fair was attended by individuals recently released from incarceration and representatives from local agencies offering supportive services to that population. Attendees learned about the City’s tenant-requested inspection process and federally funded housing rehabilitation programs available to low-income homeowners.

Neighborhood Services staff visit CommUnity Matters sites
Neighborhood Services staff recently performed site visits for CommUnity Matters summer programs. These periodic visits allow City staff to tour the facilities and witness the youth participate in the programs receiving CDBG funding throughout the year.

Neil Street lane closure announced for water valve repairs
In order to repair a leaking water valve, Illinois American Water will close a southbound lane of Neil Street between Hill Street and Main Street. The closure will begin on Tuesday, September 3, and will reopen on Friday, September 6, 2024. During the closure, southbound Neil Street traffic will be reduced to one lane.

Countywide residential electronics collection set for October at Parkland College
The Countywide Residential Electronics Collection (CREC) event this fall will take place on Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Parkland College. Registration for this event opens on Monday, September 2, 2024. To attend the CREC event, residents of participating Champaign County communities must register online in advance at https://ecycle.simplybook.me/.

Anthony Drive road closure scheduled for early September
White Construction will close Anthony Drive between Dobbins Drive and Campbell Drive. Eastbound and westbound Anthony Drive traffic will be detoured in the area. The closure will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting on Tuesday, September 3, and ending on Friday, September 6, 2024, weather permitting. Access will be maintained to all local properties.

Routine storm sewer maintenance to affect Neil Street and Bradley Avenue intersection
National Power Rodding Corp. will be conducting routine storm sewer maintenance at the intersection of Neil Street and Bradley Avenue, affecting traffic flow through the area. Traffic in all directions will be maintained, with no total road closures, although minor delays may occur within the work zone.

Logan Street closure announced for bridge maintenance by Canadian National Railway
Canadian National Railway has announced the closure of Logan Street between Market Street and Water Street to facilitate bridge maintenance. Police investigate shooting incident on N. Market Street
Champaign Police were dispatched at 5:13 a.m. on August 24, 2024, to the 1400 block of N. Market Street for a shooting with injuries. On-scene, officers quickly located a 17-year-old Champaign man with a life-threatening gunshot wound. CPD officers and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department rendered immediate medical aid until he could be transported to an area hospital. He remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Kings Way at Campbell Drive to close for street repairs
A&A Concrete will be closing Kings Way at Campbell Drive to conduct street repairs. The work is scheduled to commence on Monday, August 26, 2024, and the closure is anticipated to last five days, contingent on weather conditions.
