The Champaign Police Department has been accredited as a Tier II Law Enforcement Agency by the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP), an Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police program. Tier II Accreditation reflects ILEAP’s highest level of professionalism and is based on evidence that CPD policies and practices meet 181 professional standards.
“Peer review and accreditation ensure that Champaign Police operate with care and professionalism for the community we serve,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “I am proud of the efforts of our officers and professional staff, and thankful to our community leaders for providing us with the resources and direction to not just meet standards, but to exceed them.”
Continued accreditation through ILEAP demonstrates that the Champaign Police Department maintains a high level of professionalism among law enforcement agencies in Illinois and validates the methods used to provide services to our community. In addition to improving processes and procedures through best practices, accreditation makes the agency more accountable for its actions, with the additional benefits of limiting liability and risk exposure.
The Department’s accreditation is the culmination of months of work by CPD’s Administration Division, which concluded with an on-site assessment of the agency in April 2024. The Champaign Police Department was the second department in Illinois to undergo assessment through the ILEAP accreditation program in 2010 and is among just 64 agencies in Illinois to achieve Tier II accreditation out of more than 1,200 agencies across the state.
Representatives from ILEAP were on-hand at the September 3 meeting of the Champaign City Council to present Champaign Police with their accreditation plaque.
