Champaign Police were dispatched at 2:58 a.m. on July 5, 2024, to an area hospital after two people arrived by personal transport with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers learned that a 41-year-old male victim from Champaign had suffered a potentially life-threatening injury to the abdomen and a 28-year-old female victim from Champaign had suffered a graze. Officers interviewed the pair to determine details of the incident that led to their injuries. Both remain hospitalized in stable condition.

The initial investigation indicates that the victims were attending a gathering in the parking lot of a business in the 600 block of E. University Avenue when the man and an unknown subject engaged in a verbal altercation. As the altercation quickly escalated, the unknown subject produced a firearm and fired a shot, wounding both victims. The subject then fled the area while the victims were transported to an area hospital for medical assistance.

Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
