As Independence Day approaches and the community prepares to celebrate July 4th, the City of Champaign reminds residents and visitors that fireworks can be dangerous. The city encourages celebrating safely by leaving fireworks to professionals.
More than 19,500 fires are reported annually due to fireworks. Children aged 10–14 have the highest rate of fireworks injury, with more than one-third of victims being under age 15. To prevent injuries and property damage, officials advise attending professional fireworks displays instead of using personal fireworks.
For those who choose to use legal fireworks, several safety tips are recommended:
- Use only legal fireworks such as sparklers. Note that sparklers can heat up to 1,200˚F and should not be used by children without adult supervision.
- Fireworks that must be lit by a wick, explode, or shoot into the air are generally illegal in Champaign.
- Use all fireworks outside and away from homes, people, trees, dry grass, or other flammable substances.
- Always have a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher nearby when handling fireworks.
- Seek immediate medical attention if injured by fireworks. For eye injuries, avoid rubbing the affected area as it may cause further damage.
- The best way to prevent firework injuries is not to use them at all. Attend public firework displays handled by professionals.
Residents can refer to Chapter 13, Article II of the City of Champaign Municipal Code of Ordinances for detailed definitions on what is allowed and prohibited within city limits. Additionally, maintaining a working smoke alarm and regularly practicing a home escape plan in case of fire or other emergencies is advised.
