Champaign Police are investigating two shootings with injuries from the early hours of July 20, 2024. These incidents are being investigated separately, as investigators have no indication that they are related.

At 1:19 a.m. on July 20, 2024, Champaign Police were on an assigned detail near Main Street and Fremont Street when they heard gunshots and moved toward the sound. On-scene, officers located a vehicle carrying a 42-year-old female victim from Rantoul with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. They rendered medical aid and assisted her in getting to an area hospital by personal transport. She remains hospitalized in stable condition. Officers investigating the incident learned that a yet-unknown man had produced a firearm and opened fire, striking the woman before fleeing the area.

In another incident, Champaign Police were dispatched at 2:45 a.m. on July 20, 2024, when a vehicle arrived at the Fire Station in the 700 block of W. Bradley Avenue carrying two people with gunshot wounds. Officers with Champaign Police and personnel with the Champaign Fire Department worked to quickly render medical aid to a 16-year-old male victim from Champaign and an 18-year-old female victim from Dewey, IL, each with multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds to the torso. Both victims were then transported to an area hospital by ambulance, where they remain in serious condition. Officers learned that the victims had been driving westbound on Colleen Drive when an unknown subject approached the vehicle and fired multiple shots, striking passengers inside. The vehicle then fled the area, calling 9-1-1 for assistance before stopping at the Fire Station to seek immediate medical aid.

Officers continue to canvass the surrounding areas of each incident for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in nearby areas with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
