Adam Niemerg, a state representative from Illinois, has announced the filing of articles of impeachment against Governor J.B. Pritzker, citing divisive rhetoric and policies. Niemerg made this announcement on the social media platform X.

"When Governor Pritzker declared that Republicans “cannot know a moment of peace,” he revealed just how reckless and divisive his leadership has become," said Adam M. Niemerg. "Now, in the wake of Charlie Kirk's tragic death, he has doubled down — blaming Donald Trump and January 6. Meanwhile, Pritzker chooses political posturing by protecting illegal immigrants instead of protecting Illinoisans. That is why I have filed articles of impeachment against JB Pritzker. Illinois deserves better leadership."

According to Capitol City Now, Niemerg filed House Resolution 467 on September 12, 2025, seeking the impeachment of Governor Pritzker. The resolution points to Pritzker's comments following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as being "incompatible with his official duties." Niemerg, who is aligned with the Illinois Freedom Caucus, has become the chief sponsor of this measure as part of a broader Republican response to Pritzker’s political statements.

Illinois Policy reported in 2024 that state spending on immigrant services has increased significantly. The state was projected to spend over $2.5 billion on migrant care by the end of 2025, including approximately $1.6 billion for healthcare coverage for immigrants through July 2024. Fox 32 Chicago confirmed that expenses related to shelter, healthcare, and emergency services for migrants are placing a strain on the state budget.

Historically, divisive political rhetoric has played a role in impeachment efforts. In 1871, North Carolina Governor William Woods Holden was impeached and removed from office after deploying militia during what became known as the "Kirk–Holden War." Critics argued that his actions infringed on civil liberties and fueled political unrest. This historical precedent demonstrates how rhetoric and controversial executive actions have been used as grounds for impeachment in state history.

Niemerg is a Republican state representative serving Illinois’ 102nd District since January 2021. He previously represented the 109th District. A native of Teutopolis, he holds a degree in history from Eastern Illinois University and worked for more than a decade as a senior claims adjuster for Country Financial. His policy positions include fiscal conservatism, pension reform, gun rights advocacy, and opposition to abortion rights according to his official legislative biography and Ballotpedia.
