The City of Champaign's Municipal Electric Aggregation (MEA) program, which was suspended in July 2024, will continue to be on hold until a reassessment scheduled for spring 2026. Efforts by city staff to restart the program in the summer of 2025 were unsuccessful after four attempts. The electricity supply rate from Ameren is expected to be lower than the most competitive offer rate received by the city, resulting in lower costs for Ameren customers.

The suspension does not equate to a termination of the MEA program. If a contract offering a competitive electricity supply at rates lower than Ameren's can be secured in the future, the city's program may resume.

Currently, customers have several options:

- Do nothing and remain with Ameren as their electricity supplier. Note that Ameren's rate will vary slightly each month.

- Choose a new energy supplier from over 40 options available on the ICC Plug-In Illinois website. Options include renewable energy sources, fixed or variable electricity rates, and various contract lengths.

- Subscribe to community solar through offers listed on the Citizens Utility Board website. Options include different savings percentages, contract terms, and billing methods.
