Urbana, which is certified as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, is seeking public comment on a draft of its Bicycle Master Plan through Feb 1.
City officials said the new plan will move the city toward Platinum Level certification.
The plan covers activities over the next five years for which officials say the city alone is responsible and which are fully accounted for in the city budget. The city will collaborate with the Urbana Park District and others to carry out other objectives.
Some particular recommendations include an Urbana Green Loop trail that would connect all of Urbana’s parks, the MCORE Project, which would connect the University of Illinois to Downtown Urbana, safe routes to schools, rail-trails, and bike trail access for low-income neighborhoods and employers. The report also includes ideas for stream corridor trails, bike parking, and improved bicycle outreach and education.
The draft plan can be reviewed at the Urbana Free Library, the City of Urbana Community Development Department, the Public Works Department, and online at http://cuuats.org/ubmp/documents.
