An Urbana man has been arrested in connection with a shooting incident on July 4, 2025, that resulted in the death of a Champaign resident. The Champaign Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the 1900 block of W. Bradley Avenue at 12:36 a.m. on July 4, 2025. During the investigation, Martez Jones, aged 32 from Champaign, arrived at a local hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.
Investigations revealed that Jones was outside a business when multiple shots were fired by Rynell Frazier, aged 37 from Urbana. Frazier fled the scene following the shooting. Besides the injuries sustained by Jones, several vehicles were also damaged. A warrant for Frazier's arrest was issued on July 4, but he was not apprehended until July 17 in Merrillville, Indiana. The Champaign Police Department is arranging for Frazier's return to Champaign County Correction Facility for arraignment.
The investigation is ongoing as officers seek witnesses and video footage to aid their inquiries. Residents or businesses with exterior surveillance cameras are encouraged to contact the police department. Updates will be provided as they become available.
