Urbana snow crews gear up for winter

Urbanasnow

The city of Urbana Public Works Department's snow crews are preparing for a busy winter season.

The city uses 23 pieces of snow equipment, a 1,400-ton salt storage facility, and 12 man crews working 12 hours at a time to respond to snow and ice events.

Clearing begins on primary thoroughfares such as Florida and Vine, Philo and Windsor, Bradley and Lincoln, Green and Pennsylvania, Washington and Main, Springfield and Kinch, Race and Broadway, Mumford and Colorado, and Lierman, and also includes sidewalks on city-owned property. Residents in snow removal areas are responsible for clearing their own sidewalks of snow and ice.

The city does not take responsibility for state and township roads.

The city pays an average of $140,000 per year to maintain snow services for over 300 miles of Urbana roadways.
