The village of Savoy Board of Trustees recently approved this year's update to the Champaign County Multi-Jurisdictional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The plan was drafted in 2009 to provide comprehensive assessments of the natural and technical hazards potential in Champaign County communities and provide suggestions for proactively addressing them. The update extends the plan for five more years.
The new hazard mitigation plan was created by a group of fire and police officials, planners and development specialists from around the county and was funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Fire officials were also present at the board's meeting to announce that the Savoy Fire Department was awarded an $800 grant from Illinois American Water to provide Savoy firefighters with new hoods. The new equipment was needed because of a rise in recruits this year that brought the number of volunteer firefighters in Savoy up to 55. Fire Chief Mike Forrest also said there were a record 76 fire calls in September.
Also in the meeting, the board approved Forrest's request for the purchase of a 2016 Chevy Tahoe command vehicle, valued at $55,068, from Miles Chevrolet.
