The Mahomet Seymour Community Unit School District No. 3 is getting high-speed gigabyte fiber-optic broadband Internet access.
Central Illinois Regional Broadband Network (CIRBN) will hold a ceremonial fusion splicing at Sangamon Elementary School in Mahomet tomorrow at 5 p.m. to celebrate. Village of Mahomet Board of Trustees President Sean Widener, Superintendent Rick Johnston and School Board President Max McComb will all be in attendance.
“We are excited to be bringing fiber-optic Internet service to the village of Mahomet," CIRBN Executive Director Mark DeKeersgieter said. "I would like to specifically thank the Mahomet-Seymour Community Unit School District No. 3 and the village of Mahomet, their elected officials, and the team at CIRBN for working so hard to make this opportunity possible. In furthering CIRBN’s mission of connecting communities, we look forward to bringing a 100 percent fiber network to organizations in Mahomet and delivering gigabyte Internet service."
The broadband network will not only serve the school, but local businesses and community members as well. Local officials said the expanded bandwith will be a boon to local businesses who depend on connectivity to thrive.
“A reliable and affordable fiber-optic broadband network is important and fundamental for Mahomet to be competitive in our efforts to help drive economic development growth from new business attraction and to retain current businesses," Village Administrator Patrick Brown said.
The event marks the culmination of several years of investment and planning by the village and the school district. The school first invested in the infrastructure to build the network in 2013, while the village funded additional infrastructure expansion in 2014.
