The state SURS system seeks qualified applicants for the position of executive director of its board of trustees, a role instrumental in achieving its board of directors’ goals and cultivating a high-functioning work culture.
The Champaign-based position will involve day-to-day oversight of the 132-member SURS workforce while reporting regularly to the board and charting both organizational and investment directions for the system. Supervision of managers, authority for hiring staff, and carrying out board functions are primary responsibilities.
Candidates should have measurable success in the areas of working with the public; large-scale budget management; operational understanding of investment; leadership with a focus on exemplary customer service, and proven rapport with varied stakeholders such as labor and workforce organizations as well as legislators.
Demonstrated interest in policy, employee benefit programs, advocacy and cultivation of talented staff also head the list of preferred strengths.
The executive director will have at least 15 years of experience with management of large, complex organizations. SURS desires an individual who is strategic, original, consensus-oriented, organized and creative in leadership, communication and multitasking. The successful candidate should be willing to commit to at least a five-year time frame for the position.
Additionally, the director must want to serve the public with the highest level of integrity; commit to accountability, sustainability and inclusiveness in all aspects of the position; handle pressure effectively, and demonstrate leadership and presentation skills.
