The Urbana City Council voted 4-3 Monday in favor of a resolution that calls on state lawmakers to consider raising the gasoline tax.
The gas tax is built into Illinois fuel prices to raise money for municipalities to maintain roads and other infrastructure.
The Urbana resolution says funding for these projects has not been adequate and reasons that, in light of lower gas prices and more fuel-efficient transportation, consumers could bear a higher tax that would provide the additional revenue needed for villages and cities to make greater investments in infrastructure.
Council members Brown, Smyth, Marlin and Roberts voted in favor of the resolution.
