State Representative Brandun Schweizer from Danville has announced that three bills aimed at supporting veterans have passed both the Illinois House and Senate. These legislative measures are now awaiting the governor's approval.

Senate Bill 1160, initially introduced by State Representative Stephanie Kifowit before being transferred to Rep. Schweizer, seeks to amend the Illinois Vehicle Code. The amendment would allow Illinois residents who served in the United Nations Protecting Force in Somalia, Panama, or Grenada to apply for a specialized license plate.

Senate Bill 2175 is another initiative backed by Rep. Schweizer, who serves as its Chief Co-sponsor. This bill aligns with his previously proposed HB 2777 and is driven by the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. It aims to clarify the allocation of time off for veterans' medical appointments. Currently, veterans employed in Illinois can take four days off annually for medical examinations related to military service-related disabilities without affecting their accrued sick leave. The new legislation broadens this provision to cover all veteran medical appointments and necessary interventions.

House Bill 2572, sponsored by Rep. Schweizer, also originates from an initiative by the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. It proposes amendments to both the School Code and the Deceased, Disabled, and MIA/POW Veterans’ Dependents Educational Opportunity Grant Act and Scholarship. This bill would grant rulemaking authority when determining eligibility for grants and scholarships—a power currently absent under existing law.

Rep. Schweizer expressed satisfaction with these developments: “These bills will help make life easier for our veterans,” he stated. “Sponsoring legislation that makes the lives of veterans easier is one of my legislative priorities." He further conveyed optimism about the governor signing these bills into law soon.
