State Representative Brandun Schweizer has announced the successful passage of SB 1723, a legislative measure aimed at protecting the Mahomet Aquifer, through both the House and Senate. Schweizer, serving as the Chief Co-Sponsor, collaborated with Rep. Carol Ammons, who acted as the Chief House Sponsor for this bill.

The legislation specifically prohibits carbon sequestration in any facility that interacts with sole-source aquifers such as the Mahomet Aquifer. Additionally, it establishes the Mahomet Aquifer Study Commission to evaluate the safety of carbon capture and storage under this vital water source.

Rep. Schweizer expressed his gratitude towards his colleagues for their efforts: “I applaud Rep. Ammons, Sen. Faraci, and Sen. Rose for their tremendous work on this legislation.” He emphasized the importance of protecting the aquifer due to its role in providing clean water to 15 counties in central Illinois, impacting over one million residents.

Schweizer further acknowledged his peers' support: “I thank both my Senate and House colleagues for ensuring this measure passed. We are almost to the finish line to ensure the protection of the Mahomet Aquifer from avoidable contamination,” he said while expressing anticipation for gubernatorial approval.
