State Representative Brandun Schweizer of Danville has expressed his opposition to the recent passage of HB 2827 by the House Education Policy Committee. The bill, which passed with an 8-4-1 vote, mandates increased regulations on homeschool families and requires non-public elementary and secondary schools to register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. Additionally, it introduces a requirement for homeschools to complete a Homeschool Declaration Form or face penalties such as truancy charges, fines, or imprisonment.

Rep. Schweizer criticized the decision to advance HB 2827, stating: “The decision made to move HB 2827 through committee is a disservice to our homeschooling and non-public school students here in Illinois, as they have been vocal about their opposition to the legislation.” He highlighted that over 41,000 opposition slips were submitted against the bill and noted the lack of bipartisan support.

Schweizer emphasized his commitment to "Homeschool Freedom," aiming to ensure that all students have equal opportunities for success regardless of their learning environment. He stressed the importance of parental involvement in education.
