Illinois baseball faced a challenging start to their Big Ten season, losing to Michigan 12-7 at Holman Stadium in Vero Beach, Florida. The Illini, now with a record of 6-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference, struggled despite some strong individual performances.

Michigan reduced Illinois's lead to one with two runs in the fifth inning before taking control of the game by scoring five runs in the sixth inning, leading 7-3. Illinois attempted to rally back within one run but could not maintain momentum as Michigan extended their lead with four more runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth.

Zebig hit a solo home run in the ninth inning for Illinois, but it was insufficient to change the outcome.

The Fighting Illini will continue their series against Michigan tomorrow at Holman Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.

Noteworthy performances included Grant Ross going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and drawing a walk; he has accumulated six RBIs over his last three games. Jack Zebig went 2-for-3 with four runs scored; he has achieved multi-hit games in five of his last six outings and has scored eight times across his last three games while maintaining a streak of walks drawn over four consecutive games. Coltin Quagliano also went 2-for-4 contributing an RBI.
