The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams participated in the first day of the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Indiana. Freshman Avril Andre achieved a significant milestone by entering the program's top-10 list in the 5000m event. She secured fourth place with a time of 16:37.29, marking it as the sixth-fastest time in the program's history.
In another notable performance, freshman Cody Johnston finished fourth in the men's pole vault competition with a height of 5.35 meters (17-6 1/2), just shy of his personal best.
Junior Maggie Gamboa set a new personal record in the 5000m race with a time of 16:57.59, earning her tenth place. The men's 5000m race saw three athletes achieve personal bests. Sophomore Alex Partlow led his team by finishing fourth with a time of 14:25.27, followed closely by junior Anthony Maida in fifth at 14:27.02, while senior Evan Cummins came in twenty-ninth at 14:56.73.
The Illini track and field teams are scheduled to continue their participation on February 3rd for the final day of events at the Meyo Invitational, with track events starting at 9 a.m., and field events commencing an hour later at 10 a.m. Fans can watch live coverage on ESPN from 1 p.m CT.
