Two athletes from Illinois, senior Tyler Sudduth and graduate student Amber Simpson, represented their respective teams in the weight throw event at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Thursday. Competing for the No. 22 men's and No. 16 women's field teams, both athletes secured 13th place finishes.
Tyler Sudduth achieved a mark of 21.48 meters (70-5 3/4) during his first attempt in the men's weight throw competition. Unfortunately, he fouled on his subsequent two attempts and did not progress to the finals.
Amber Simpson recorded a best throw of 20.72 meters (67-11 3/4) in her initial attempt in the women's weight throw competition. Similar to Sudduth, she was unable to advance further after fouling on her second attempt and achieving a distance of 20.50 meters (67-3 1/4) on her third try.
The Illinois track and field teams will continue their participation in Day 2 of the NCAA Indoor Championships tomorrow. Senior Aiden Ouimet is set to begin his heptathlon at 8:30 a.m., while junior Tori Thomas will compete in the pole vault at 5 p.m. Freshmen Sophia Beckmon and Elizabeth Ndudi, along with junior Tacoria Humphrey, are scheduled for the long jump at 6 p.m., followed by junior Jessica McDowell running in the 400m semifinals at 6:30 p.m. The events can be watched live on ESPN+ with real-time results available online.
