Illinois secured a place in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2005 with a narrow 72-69 victory over Iowa State on Thursday night at TD Garden. The third-seeded Illini never trailed in the game against the second-seeded Cyclones, advancing further in the NCAA Tournament.
Terrence Shannon Jr. led Illinois with 29 points, marking his seventh consecutive game scoring at least 20 points. Despite foul trouble during much of the second half, Shannon contributed crucial points towards the end of the game and added five rebounds, three steals, and two assists to his performance.
Coleman Hawkins scored 12 points while shooting 50% from the field and made two critical steals. Marcus Domask contributed seven points along with six rebounds and five assists, continuing his streak of games with significant contributions in both categories.
Luke Goode added eight points off the bench, including two key free throws in the closing minutes. Dain Dainja also came off the bench to score seven points and secure six rebounds, helping maintain Illinois' edge throughout.
The Illini started strong with an 8-0 run and maintained their lead despite several pushes by Iowa State. Illinois' advantage fluctuated but remained intact through efficient scoring runs spearheaded by Shannon and Hawkins.
Shannon's return after accumulating four fouls was pivotal as he hit a crucial three-pointer that kept Illinois ahead. With just under a minute remaining, a fast-break dunk by Shannon following a steal helped seal Iowa State's fate.
With this win, Illinois improves to a record of 29-8 for the season and prepares to face reigning champion Connecticut at TD Garden on Saturday evening. The team will look to continue its momentum as it seeks its first Final Four appearance since reaching it last in 2005.
