Illini defeat Washington Huskies in four sets at home

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini women's volleyball team secured a four-set win over Washington at Huff Hall on Friday night, improving their Big Ten record to 8-7 and their overall season record to 13-11.

Kenna Phelan recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 42 assists, 11 digs, five kills (a career high), five blocks, and two aces. Alyssa Aguayo also achieved a double-double, her ninth career performance in that category, with 12 kills and 17 digs. Taylor de Boer led the team in kills with 14.

Ashlyn Philpot contributed efficiently with 12 kills on a .550 hitting percentage along with five blocks and four digs. Auburn Tomkinson added eight kills, while Gabby Dean matched her career-high six kills and set a new personal best with three blocks.

Defensively, Taryn Kirsch had 13 digs for the twelfth time this season and logged an ace for the fifth time in the campaign. Kenzie Cogan also tallied eight digs and an ace.

Washington started strong by taking the first set 25-22 after leading most of the way. Illinois responded by winning the next three sets: they took control early in both the second (25-20) and fourth sets (25-13), while using a key nine-point run in the third set to secure it by a margin of 25-16.

Illinois held Washington to a .187 hitting percentage while posting a .283 mark themselves. The Illini served seven aces compared to just two for Washington.

Head coach Chris Tamas now holds an overall record of 162-105 during his tenure at Illinois. The Illini evened their all-time home record against Washington to four wins and five losses this season at Huff Hall.

Attendance for Friday's match was announced as 3,057 spectators.

Illinois will conclude its homestand on Saturday night against #11 Wisconsin in its annual Stuff Huff contest at Huff Hall.
