State Senator Chapin Rose | Illinois General Assembly
This week, a significant legislative step was taken as the bill to prohibit carbon dioxide sequestration and storage beneath the Mahomet Aquifer advanced from the General Assembly to Governor Pritzker's desk. The progression of this legislation has been attributed to the efforts of central Illinois residents who actively engaged through calls, emails, and letters.
Senator Chapin Rose expressed gratitude for these community actions, stating, "Thank you for standing up and making your voice heard." He also acknowledged Senator Faraci's contributions to advancing the bill on a bipartisan basis.
However, Rose emphasized that the process is not yet complete. The bill requires Governor Pritzker's signature to become law. Rose criticized the governor for previous decisions that allowed CO2 sequestration while leaving the aquifer unprotected. Despite passing both chambers with a veto-proof majority, Rose urged the governor to sign it without forcing an override.
Rose highlighted the importance of clean water, urging continued public pressure and encouraging people to sign a petition advocating for Senate Bill 1723.
