Champaign Police responded to a report of a stabbing at 12:03 a.m. on March 22, 2025, in the 1600 block of W. Healey Street. Upon arrival, officers found two victims: a 22-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, both from Champaign. Medical aid was provided with the help of paramedics, and the woman was taken to a hospital where she remains in critical condition. The man was discovered nearby with multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead by the Champaign County Coroner.

The investigation suggests that the victims were attacked inside their home by someone they knew. After being stabbed, they ran outside for help while the attacker fled. With assistance from other law enforcement agencies, police arrested Alex Muanambta, 23, at a residence in Rantoul. He faces charges of First-Degree Murder and Attempted Murder, with more charges possibly forthcoming as investigations continue.

Despite an arrest being made, the investigation is ongoing. Officers are searching for witnesses and video footage from the area that might aid their inquiry. Residents or businesses with exterior surveillance cameras are urged to contact the police department for potential evidence sharing.

The Champaign Police Department expressed gratitude to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and Rantoul Police Department for their support in this case.
