The City of Champaign Public Works Department is preparing to manage the anticipated wintry weather expected from Sunday to Monday. Forecasts predict over four inches of snow, with some agencies suggesting accumulations up to ten inches. The snowfall may be accompanied by sleet or freezing rain and gusty winds.
Public Works Operations Manager Cory Conrad stated, “We are following the plans outlined in the City’s Snow and Ice Control Plan. Based on this current forecast, Public Works crews will report for duty Sunday morning and we will continue around-the-clock operations until the snow and ice control plan actions are complete.”
The forecasted significant snowfall, followed by dropping temperatures, may result in snow remaining on the ground longer than usual. Residents are advised to stay home if possible to allow crews to clear roadways safely. Those who must travel should take precautions: leave early, allow extra time for their journey, and exercise caution around snowplows. Motorists are encouraged to avoid parking on streets during this period to aid plowing efforts and use alternate off-street parking options such as the Hill Street Parking Deck in Downtown.
Public Works staff will continue monitoring forecasts proactively and respond efficiently to any inclement weather threats. Residents can find updates about street clearing activities on the City's website (champaignil.gov/snow), CGTV cable channel 5, and through local media.
