The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment building located in the 100 block of Buena Vista Drive on Monday, November 25, at 12:56 p.m. Fire crews quickly brought the situation under control.

Firefighters arrived after receiving a report from a passerby about the blaze in this four-unit apartment building. Upon arrival, they observed moderate smoke emanating from the single-story structure. A hose line was deployed into one of the apartments, successfully containing the fire within that unit.

The incident has been classified as accidental, attributed to a kitchen appliance. Fortunately, no firefighter injuries were reported, and the occupant of the affected unit was not present during the incident.

Residents are reminded of important safety measures: "When the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out. If you must escape through smoke, stay low to the ground. Try to close doors behind you as you leave to help slow the spread of smoke and fire and help others exit."
