Illinois falls short against Ohio State despite strong performances from Xu and Treiber

Alice Xu and Kasia Treiber secured singles victories for the Illinois women's tennis team, which was defeated 4-2 by Ohio State on Sunday. The match at OSU's Ty Tucker Tennis Center concluded the regular season for both teams.

With this result, Illinois stands at 16-8 overall and 8-3 in Big Ten matches. Ohio State improved to 17-6 overall and 10-1 in Big Ten play.

Ohio State took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The match between Kasia Treiber/McKenna Schaefbauer and Ratliff/Spencer went unfinished at No. 2.

The Buckeyes extended their lead to 3-0 before Illinois responded. Treiber achieved a victory at No. 5 singles with a score of 6-3, 6-4, marking her fourth consecutive win. She holds a record of 16-13 overall this season, including a duals record of 13-8 and an 8-3 mark in Big Ten play.

Xu followed with another win for Illinois, narrowing the gap to 3-2. The freshman won her first set 6-3 and overcame a deficit in the second set to win it in a tiebreaker, finishing with scores of 7-6 (5). This victory marked Xu's eighth straight win, bringing her record to 12-4 overall, with an undefeated duals record of 8-0 and a perfect Big Ten record of 7-0.

Ohio State secured its fourth point at No.1 singles to clinch the match with a final score of 4-2.

Illinois will next compete in the Big Ten Tournament from April 24 to April 28 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
