Illinois falls to Ohio State in Big Ten wrestling opener

The Illinois wrestling team, ranked No. 25, faced a tough challenge against the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes in their Big Ten opener on January 12, 2024. The match concluded with Ohio State securing a dominant victory with a score of 36-6.

Freshman Kannon Webster, competing at 149 lbs., achieved his first ranked dual win of his college career by defeating Dylan D'Emilio from Ohio State with a score of 4-1. This victory improved Webster's season record to 11-1, making him one of two Illini wrestlers to achieve double-digit wins this season.

Redshirt junior Edmond Ruth also contributed to Illinois' points by winning his bout at 174 lbs. Ruth triumphed over Rocco Welsh from Ohio State with a narrow decision of 2-1. With this victory, Ruth's season record stands at 12-1, and he continues to lead the team in dual points scored.

The next match for the Illinois team is scheduled for January 20 at Huff Hall where they will face Northwestern in their Big Ten home opener.
