The Champaign Police Department is collaborating with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and over 200 local law enforcement agencies to address impaired and unbuckled driving. This initiative will see increased enforcement across Illinois from June 20 through July 7, aligning with the Independence Day celebrations.
Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler emphasized the department's commitment to public safety during this period. "Champaign Police are committed to ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July," he stated. He urged residents to plan responsibly by designating a sober driver and avoiding impaired driving. Tyler added, "Safety starts with smart decisions, and that includes always wearing a seatbelt and following traffic laws."
To ensure safety during celebrations, individuals are advised to designate a sober driver and prevent friends or family members from driving under the influence. Additional recommendations include handing over keys to a designated driver before going out, using alternative transportation options if impaired, reporting impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1, and ensuring all passengers wear seat belts.
Throughout the campaign, officers will enforce Illinois laws visibly to promote sober driving and seat belt use. Citations and warnings will be issued for those found violating road rules. In Champaign, efforts will concentrate on major routes.
This traffic safety campaign in Illinois is supported by federal funds managed by IDOT.
