On February 6, 2024, the Champaign City Council will be discussing a proposed settlement agreement regarding a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the City of Champaign and its police officers. The lawsuit was filed by the Estate of Ross Booker, who was tragically killed while performing his duties as an employee of a tow truck company. Mr. Booker was struck by a passing motorist while cleaning debris at the scene of an accident in March 2022.

If approved by the City Council, the proposed settlement of $2 million will lead to the dismissal of the lawsuit. The settlement amount will be paid from the City's insurance policies. City Attorney Thomas Yu has expressed his condolences regarding the tragic situation. He stated, "This is a very tragic situation. With the assistance of an expert mediator, the parties participated in formal mediation, which included a comprehensive evaluation of the risks and expenses if the case proceeded to trial. Ultimately, the proposed settlement was determined to be in the best interests of all involved."

The Council Bill and Report to Council regarding the proposed settlement can be accessed on the City's website, champaignil.gov/council.

The City Council's consideration of this settlement demonstrates their commitment to resolving legal matters in a fair and just manner.
