State Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) is urging constituents to support the repeal of the SAFE-T Act.

"House Democrats passed sweeping legislation to defund, disarm, and disrespect our police," the legislator said on Facebook. " House Democrats voted yes, House Republicans voted NO. Violent crime is up, police retirements are increasing, and our communities are less safe. House Republicans are sponsoring legislation that would repeal the so-called ‘SAFE-T Act’. Support HR 598 - Repeal the SAFE-T Act now!"

In his Facebook post, Halbrook shared a link to a petition to repeal the SAFE-T Act. It's available here.

In early September, Halbrook spoke out about the elimination of cash bail, a cornerstone of the Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today (SAFE-T) Act, the Chambana Sun reported. "I have no issue with efforts to lower the cost of bail for non-violent offenders, but eliminating bail altogether is just a bad idea," Halbrook said. "The purpose of our justice system is to protect our communities.  If someone is a flight risk or if someone is likely to put innocent people in danger, our justice system should have tools in place to keep these individuals off the streets. Our focus must be on the safety of our communities."

In May, Halbrook joined a group of legislators in a town hall type session focusing on repealing the SAFE-T Act, according to the East Central Reporter "What we're talking about was the SAFE-T Act that Democrats passed in the wee hours of [the] lame duck [session] back in January of 2021, and what we're seeing is carjacking[s], muggings, homicides of all kinds,"   Halbrook said. "The crime rates are skyrocketing in Illinois, much higher than across our nation. We just have a climate that has empowered criminals to do whatever they want to do and there’s no fear of being punished."
