Sen. Scott Bennett (D-Champaign) wants tax rebates for Illinois residents.
Under his proposal, taxpayers would start receiving income tax rebates this fall.
"Under the plan, each taxpayer would receive $100 plus another $50 for each dependent child up to three children," the legislator said in a recent press conference. "So for example a joint filing household with two children would get $300."
There are income limits, Bennett explained.
"You wouldn't qualify if you make more than a quarter of a million dollars as an individual filer or half a million as a joint filer," he said. "As proposed, more than 97% of Illinois taxpayers would receive a check under this plan. All you have to do is file your taxes."
Senate Bill 1150 was filed by Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) in February 2021, and was placed on the Senate Calendar Order of 3rd Reading March 31, 2022. Bennett's tax plan is included in one of the amendments.
Sen. Jason Plummer (R-Vandalia) is not in favor of this plan. He took to Facebook to air his displeasure.
"You see what they do – raise taxes on you for years and then, like magic, right before the election they appear like Santa Clause to provide you 'relief' with a temporary gimmick," Plummer said. "In this instance, you'll get a check and 'relief' right before the election. And immediately after the election the 'relief' disappears and they are back to treating the working men and women of Illinois like ATMs to fund their bloated government and pet projects. Remember what Sir Winston Churchill said, 'There is nothing government can give you that it hasn't taken from you in the first place.'"
