Illinois State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet),
State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Champaign) has filled Senate Bill 2928, seeking to give harsher penalties for carjacking.
The bill, filed Oct. 13, amends the Criminal Code of 2012.
This amendment “Provides for enhanced sentencing for: (1) aggravated vehicular hijacking.”
It likewise amends the Unified Code of Corrections to make any conforming changes.
Among the increased penalties for carjacking, the bill also calls for enhanced sentencing in the case of weapons possessed or used by convicted felons, aggravated discharge of a firearm and the use of a “stolen or illegally acquired firearm in the commission of an offense.”
Several Republican senators have joined Rose as co-sponsors on the bill, including Sens. Donald DeWitte (R-West Dundee), Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro), Win Stoller (R-Peoria), Neil Anderson (R-Moline) and Dan McConchie (R-Lake Zurich).
Among those who have signed on, Sens. Jason Plummer (R-Vandalia) and Jil Tracy (R-Quincy) were added as chief co-sponsors Oct. 19 and Oct. 26, respectively.
