Now that the ink has dried on Gov. J.B. Pritzker's (D-IL) signature on the new legislative district maps for Illinois, Republicans feel as though Pritzker broke his 2018 campaign promise to veto a redistricting map drawn by partisan politicians or their staff, WCIA reported.
"When J.B. Pritzker was a candidate for Governor, he made a lot of promises. He told us he was different, that he was a reformer, and that he would veto any map drawn by lawmakers. Today he broke his promise to voters and joins the all-too-long list of Illinois politicians who promise one thing and then do another," Sen. Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington) wrote in a June 4 post on his Facebook page. "The people of Illinois deserve a fair, transparent process that allows them to choose their representatives in Government. Pritzker turned his back on them and chose to use his signature to further enshrine the broken status quo of politicians picking their voters."
Pritzker signed the redistricting bill earlier this month. The law takes effect in 2023
WCIA reported that Pritzker's Democratic colleagues felt the passage of the maps was a win for diversity.
Pritzker told WCIA reporter Mark Maxwell that he still wants an independent commission, but thinks an amendment to the state constitution is needed to follow through with it.
