State Rep. Mike Marron (R-Fithian) says that the proposed criminal justice reform will have a grave impact on the victims of crime.
The bill, he said, leaves a confusing patchwork of definitions that will cause more suffering and pain to victims and their families.
Maron said he understands the desire to work on criminal justice initiatives.
Marron said he's particularly worried about the elimination of cash bail for some crimes.
“I believe that legal consequences are necessary for people that commit serious crimes. The end of cash bail and confusion surrounding pre-trial detention are issues I know are particularly concerning to law enforcement officials and the state attorneys around Illinois,” Marron said.
He said working on issues like these needs the voice of those who will be affected, including law enforcement officials.
“The final product that passed the House and the Senate lacked bipartisan support,” he added. “It left out major concerns expressed by law enforcement, advocacy groups, and the overwhelming majority of state attorneys in Illinois.”
Marron urged the governor to heed the call.
“Gov. Pritzker, I hope you are listening to the public officials on the ground that would have to deal with the real-world impacts of these sweeping changes.”
