Caulkins rages Springfield Democrats' tax threat 'is typical of Chicago Machine intimidation tactics'

In the eyes of veteran state Rep. Dan Caulkins (R-Decatur), what he’s seeing looks all too familiar.

“This is typical Chicago Machine intimidation tactics,” Caulkins told the Chambana Sun. “The same type of intimidation tactics Speaker (Mike) Madigan regularly uses. Instead of talking about how we can balance our budget, we’re back to debating raising taxes. I think it’s clear what the people want.”

Caulkins rages the progressive tax pushed by the governor since his days on the campaign trail just paves the way for more of the same. And to make it happen, Pritzker and company seem willing to go to any lengths.

Democrat Lt. Gov. Julianna Stratton recently warned voters if Pritzker’s proposal fails to get the support it needs for passage on Nov.3, taxpayers could soon face a 20% state income tax hike to cover any looming budget shortfall. Such a steep rise would send rates spiraling to an all-time personal high state income tax rate for residents of 5.94%.

Since then, the governor has essentially co-signed Stratton’s threat, further warning taxpayers it’s either the progressive tax or a 15% cut in government services, which could mean cuts in funding for education and public safety and a state property tax increase.

“I think that’s a clear message for anyone undecided about this proposal,” Caulkins added. “The only message we’re getting from Democrats is we’re going to tax you even more.”

Caulkins fears it all stands to come at a heavy cost for the state.

“It opens the door for taxing retirement income and gives Springfield a blank check,” he said. “If I were a retiree, I would definitely be voting no to this. By now, I would hope taxpayers would see democrats have no inclination for cutting taxes even though we’re in a crisis situation.”

In the end, Caulkins said it all comes down to just one thing.

“Democrats have a supermajority and a Democrat governor,” he said. “Their arrogance shows in everything they do and explains why they simply refuse to consider the opinions of others.”
