Urbana FD responds to 177 fires in 2017

Urbana Fire Department responded to 1015 calls in 2017 - 5.3 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Urbana included 177 fires - 99 structure fires, 20 vehicle fires and 58 other fires. The fire department also responded to 11 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $593,997 in fire loss - or about $3,356 per fire.

The department also received 827 false calls, including 54 malicious calls and 773 other false calls.

The calls resulted in three civilian fire-related injuries and one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, four fire service member were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Urbana Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 56 active employees and 55 retired or inactive employees, was $1,872,727 in debt as of June 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $12,654 for every fire in 2016.
