Pedal buses may soon hit the streets in Champaign.
The Champaign City Council considered draft regulations for the people-powered buses during a study session Tuesday at the Champaign City Building.
Pedal buses are large platforms, usually with open-air seating, that allow passengers in the seats to pedal and power the platform forward while a designated driver steers. The buses have become popular in several European countries and have since appeared in other cities like Naperville and Bloomington, Indiana.
City officials said two local residents have expressed interest in operating pedal bus businesses in the city.
The draft regulations would permit up to 15 people to operate a pedal bus for entertainment purposes only, and would also permit BYOB alcohol consumption if the pedal bus business procures the appropriate liquor license. The buses would be required to obtain a business license, another license specific to pedal buses, and hire drivers at least 19 years old or older. Business owners will also be required to carry a specific liability insurance package and design routes to avoid roads and streets with speed limits of 35 miles per hour and higher.
Earlier in the meeting, the council also reviewed plans for the Regional Neighborhood Network Conference, scheduled for Sept. 29 to Oct. 1. Champaign is co-hosting this year's event with the city of Urbana. Officials expect representatives from at least 24 cities to converge on the Champaign-Urbana area to discuss the progress of various projects in their home neighborhoods.
