The Philo Board of Trustees met Feb. 10 to discuss the best way to accommodate a request from Philo Gas & Car Wash to hold wine tastings.
Owners Denish Chawla and Julie Horan said they conceived of weekly wine tastings as one of a few ways to prevent losing business to Dollar General, which is expected to open this month. Other ideas the pair is considering include selling ice cream, subs and pizza.
Philo officials discussed creating a new Class B liquor license to accommodate the plans and expect to vote on an ordinance related to the request this month.
The board also discussed the possibility of improving local drainage by designing and excavating a new dry basin capable of holding 5-to 6-inch rains that would drain to the drainage district. Officials expect to meet with the drainage contractor Premier to discuss the next steps.
