This afternoon, the City of Champaign responded to a spill of agricultural lime along southbound Mattis Avenue between Hedge Road and Kirby Avenue. The material was being transported by a private truck from the Illinois American Water Plant when the incident occurred.
According to city officials, Public Works staff contacted both the trucking company and Illinois American Water Company after learning about the spill. A flusher truck was dispatched to begin clearing the road surface.
Traffic at the intersection of Kirby Avenue and Mattis Avenue was temporarily restricted while crews worked to remove the spilled material. Public Works has already completed one pass through most of the affected area and plans another cleaning cycle as they return north. Officials noted that some staining may remain on the roadway due to the volume of lime involved.
The city advises motorists who traveled southbound through this section to rinse their vehicles as soon as possible to remove any residual material.
